and then there's koa (UPDATED February 9, 2007!!!)

290 days and counting ...

koa continues to be the luckiest dog in the world ...
290 days ago he was diagnosed with hemangiosarcoma - an aggressive cancer of the blood vessels. he had his spleen removed (along with a nasty tumor), and we began this journey, though the final chapter has already been written. average survival time for dogs with this cancer is 19 to 54 days following surgery...

thankfully, koa has not had another bad day since - he's happy and energetic, and no worse for the ware. though I know our days together are numbered (literally), it's an absolute joy to have him here, and oddly, I'm grateful that I know I should be grateful. it makes each day with him that much better.

there's a life lesson in that...

What a beautiful boy he is! Thanks for the message in my blog, I love your poetry and photos (I have a blog of poetry as well, check my profile) I wrote back to your comment on my blog but wanted to post it here for you as well:

Hi Emily, I'm so sorry your Lab has this cancer too! Give him a big hug and kiss from me! I'm off to approve your message in the hemangio group and take you off moderation.

Good luck to Koa. Fenway had his surgery in December. His tumor never ruptured, than goodness. All 8 1/2 pounds were removed. He did great, but HSA is a beast and took him April 9th. I hope your Koa beats the statistics. He's a handsome boy!
